One rant about the drivers is that it does rely upon system-config-display with the fglrx options, rather than simply using aticonfig. strange... I'm trying to install the 8.27.10 driver but I get the message "X Server: unable to detect". Is that the problem you are talking about it not booting? Code: >>> Emerging (1 of 1) x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.27.10 to / * checking ebuild checksums ;-) ... Phoronix said tfp wasn't in it, but according to your glxinfo and the fact you don't have to load mesalibs seems like it is.

I wanted to say that I remembered that in the xorg-server-1.1.1 ebuild I modified myself there wasn't a use flag for fglrx, maybe that caused some problems. Another note about the X.Org 7.1 support is that X-Video with X1k products will not work, but it should be corrected in future releases. These are very unstable and should not be used except for testing purposes.
